The central aim of the Fairtrade
campaign this year, second of its kind, was to have customers in
Estonia notice how easy it is to make a difference in people's lives
in developing countries by drinking Fairtrade coffee or purchasing
other Fairtrade products.
Campaign’s kick-off event took place
on October 23, when Steven Diaz, Expocafe’s
quality and logistics director from Columbia visisted Tallinn. He
met with the Estonian retailers and customers, and dined in
Kehrwieder, the first Estonian coffee house to offer Fairtrade coffee
to its customers. Mr. Diaz opened a photo exhibition on Nicaraguan
coffee farmers in Tallinn University and gave an interview to an
Estonian TV channel environmental news.
The
central retail event was the launch of Fairtrade roses in the
Estonian biggest retail chain Rimi. Ms. Wambui Gikenye, ethical and
environmental manager of Bloom, met with Rimi staff from Estonia,
Latvia and Lithuania, gave interviews to the Estonian media. A total
of 1500 Fairtrade roses were distributed to Rimi customers. Ms.
Gikenye was also welcomed by the members of the Africa group of the
Estonian Parliament where the importance of trade between EU and
African states and the impact of Fairtrade to African farmers were
discussed.
Fairtrade
week in Estonia was organized second time jointly with the Estonian
Green Movement and the Association for Promoting Fairtrade in
Finland. Fairtrade certification mark was officially launched in
Estonia May 2007. As of November 2008 there are over 100 different
Fairtrade products available in Estonia.
